Austria remains a leader in organic viticulture, and we’ve been a proud part of it since 2013!
For the first time, a quarter of Austrian vineyards are certified organic. Exactly a quarter (25.0%) of Austria’s vineyard area is certified organic. This is shown by the latest figures from the Ministry of Agriculture. This means Austria has reached a new record and defended its position as the global leader in organic viticulture. A total of 10,524 hectares of vineyards in Austria are certified organic. This is exactly a quarter (25.0%) of the Austrian vineyard area – more than ever before. This also confirms Austria’s international pioneering role in organic viticulture.
According to the report “The World of Organic Agriculture 2025” (FiBL & IFOAM), the country was already ranked first among all major wine-producing nations in 2023 with a 22.6% organic share – far ahead of Spain (17.8%), France (17.4%), and Italy (14.6%).
More effort and risk for winemakers. Organic viticulture requires less support for winemakers both in the vineyard and in the cellar. For example, readily soluble mineral fertilizers and synthetic pesticides are prohibited. The goal is to promote health, fertility, and biodiversity in the vineyard ecosystem. Organic viticulture requires winemakers to put in more, often manual, effort to maintain the vineyards and vines.
At the same time, the risk of crop failure in adverse climatic conditions increases.
